Mid-Term Reflection

In these first six weeks of school and lessons here in this English class at City Colleg, I have learned a lot about a couple of terms such as rhetorical situation, author, audience, tone, purpose, stance, language, genre, and medium. For example, in our first essay, we had to research multiple sources about a topic and write information about it. This assignment was a rhetorical essay which is also one of the topics that we discussed and learned about in class. We had to choose 4 articles and we had to find its author, tone, audience, purpose, stance, and genre. Researching these topics and terms for the assignment gave me a better understanding of them. I further understand these terms when I provide examples of them because I get a first-hand experience with them and I get to learn since it is first explained to me and then I do them and further explore them. Understanding these terms is allowing me to write better in other classes because I can write more thoroughly and my research is going to be a lot better for those classes. When I researched the topic I was looking and reading through it thoroughly so that I could get the best information out of it for my writing piece. This is also going to help me outside of college because whenever something happens or an article is written about something, I can do my research and figure out what stance the author is taking.

Post-Essay Reflection after the inquiry-based research essay

In the most recent assignment, I wrote an informational paper about how cryptocurrency
affects the environment. My audience for the paper was anyone that cares for the environment
and all the people that are interested in cryptocurrency and are buying and selling it. The way
that my audience impacted me is because I had to inform them on the things cryptocurrency and
its mining does to the environment.

Some things that I learned about writing that I didn’t know in august was that a lot of
research needs to be done and I learned this because I have never written a paper that long
before. With all that I had to write, I had to be able to keep my audience locked in throughout the
entire thing.

This essay had a long process before it was finished. There was thinking about the idea
first which for me was easy because I had an idea already as soon as the paper was announced to
the class. Cryptocurrency has overall been one of my main interests recently in my life that’s
why I felt that it would be interesting to write about. Next was the peer-reviewing process. In one
of the class periods when we set out into groups of 3 we introduced our topic to each other. My
groupmates gave me some good feedback and helped me branch off of my main topic. I also
asked my friends outside of the class and they told me what was good and what I could improve
on. Next was the part where I researched my topic and for that one, I looked up my topic and I
found websites that I used before and I found reliable. After that, I started off writing my drafts
and it was a long and tedious process. Like I said before this was the longest essay I’ve ever
written before so this was a new milestone in writing for me

Final Reflection

Two rhetorical terms that I think had a noticeable impact on my writing were stance and audience. To start off with stance, it has had a noticeable impact on my writing because I wrote a couple of pieces where I had to state facts and back it up with evidence but I also had to include my own stance on it. For example, when I wrote my paper about cryptocurrency and its impact on the environment I had to talk about my stance on the topic. Moving onto the second term which is audience. It has a noticeable impact on my writing because I have had to talk about it in most of my work especially in my composition in two genres presentation. It was a big part of that project because I had to express the impact of it to people in different ways such as an Instagram account and a website. Overall I can write more thoroughly and my research is going to be a lot better for those classes. When I researched the topic I was looking and reading through it thoroughly so that I could get the best information out of it for my writing piece. This is also going to help me outside of college because whenever something happens or an article is written about something, I can do my research and figure out what stance the author is taking and what stance I want to have on the topic. These two rhetorical terms and many other ones that we used throughout the semester will stick with me and help me in the future. Even though I learned a lot with these terms I am still willing to learn more.
